Grand Maitre
2001
General Description:

The Collection of Grand Maitre Wines comes from the private single estate, Ghajn Rihana, with the fruit of each vintage being dedicated to one of the noble Grand Masters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc generally produces very concentrated, full bodied wines of an intense, fruity, aromatic character. The aromas are of intense concentration of a black fruit character showing ripe, integrated, astringent tannins with an animal complexity of tar and leather combined with an oaky spicy character of cinnamon and liquorice. This wine can age further and is also a collector’s item reaching high prices.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance

A fairly deep intensity displaying a deep ruby core and a barely noticeable hint of tawny on the rim.

Nose

Distinguished aromas of a developing nature with a mineral character: tar and flint, complexities of cedar wood, balsamic aromas, mint, liquorice, vanilla and tobacco with a touch of dried fruit.

Palate

Abundant unobtrusive tannins and good level acidity define the structure of this wine. A full bodied wine with intense complexities of tobacco, coffee and ripe black fruit, supported by generous alcohol and a great length of flavour.

Conclusion

Good levels of acidity, pronounced fruitiness, alcohol and tannins guarantee the ageing potential of this wine. Needs further bottle ageing.
