Hanneke Wessels
Hanneke Wessels-Rijnbeek (Delft,1947) lives and works in the Hook of Holland in the Netherlands. Hanneke has been drawing and painting for more than 25 years and in 2005, when she stopped working as an advisor for local government, she specialized full time in art. She is a member of the art association A’72 in Rotterdam, where artists draw and paint live models. She has always found this challenging and inspirational because of the quick changes of pose. She uses a wide range of mediums including charcoal, pastel, Old Dutch bistre and Chinese ink, these being applied by pen, brush or reed-pen. In addition to drawing and painting Hanneke also makes graphic art such as engravings, monotype and lino cutting. With the drypoint method in particular she can express her emotions fully. The strong deep lines cut in a zinc plate give a powerful portrayal and here again the human figure takes a central roll. Her sources of inspiration are diverse with the work of other artists like Schiele, Constant and the Maltese artist Gabriel Caruana being very important to her. From the time of her first visit in 1996, Malta has been an important source of inspiration and she is deeply moved by the landscape and its people. To Hanneke, every arrival in Malta feels like a home coming. During her stay she makes many sketches with pen and ink and also takes photographs which can be used later as the basis for work in acrylics, pastels or engravings. Her use of bister, which has the color of red earth, captures in her drawings the atmosphere of Malta. In her graphic work she also frequently uses the color of earth for the portrayal of women and goddesses and by doing so places these primitive women in their original surroundings, even when a background is absent. All artworks are for sale unless shown otherwise
