Keith Balzan, a strong determined character though eclectic in taste, is obsessed with passion and desire, speed, spontaneity and improvisation. He is highly gifted and is poised to take risks and exploit further his creative talents. His impeccable draughtsmanship with sharply defined linearity and geometric properties, together with his incised and defined graphic force, are auxiliary to his dramatic ‘chiaroscuro’ technique. Keith’s graphic works in a contrast of black and white reveal his expressive powers, his forceful character. He loves dark, obscure colours and a chromatic palette to obtain a dynamic punch and almost violent impact. His emotional and expressionistic art surfaces in his use of block black, blazing reds, flaming yellow and murky blues. He owes this stance to his own philosophy, method and approach and to the influence of some of the great masters of Expressionism: Vincent Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Edward Munch and Franz Marc. Keith’s work is packed with atmosphere and mood, with emotion and feeling, with power and strength. It is the expression of raw experience, an eyewitness account of life’s predicament. His art of moods is quite intellectual. Keith works as an Art Teacher within the Education Dept.
